Anti Anxiety Drugs are also called Anxiolytics in pharmacology . These drugs also called as Anti Panic agents . These drugs reduce anxiety acting on the brain or Central Nervous System . Most of these agents are having multiple actions like sedation , Hypnotic and Muscle relaxant action .
Anti Anxiety drugs are classified into :
1-Benzodiazepines : Alprazolam , Lorazipam , Diazepam .
2-Azapirones : Buspirone ,Gepirone .
3-Imidazoles : Medetomidine , Dexmedetomidine .
4-Anti Histamines: Hydroxyzines .
5-Miscillaneous : Barbiturates and others .
In Anti Anxiety drugs , Benzodiazepines are considered to be safe that is why these Anxiolytics are sold as OTC , Over The Counter in the pharmacies with out prescriptions , but on long term use these agents can cause addiction . Most of these Anti Anxiety drugs causes moderate to severe sedation .
