HIV MEDICINES

HIV medicines are also called Anti Retro Viral or ARV drugs . These agents are used to treat HIV positive patients due viral infection called Human Immunodeficiency Virus , a Lentivirus belongs to Retrivirus family . This infection leads to AIDS i.e. Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome .
HIV Medicines are Classified as :
1-NRTI : These are Nucleoside and Nucleotide Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors . e.g : Emtricitabine , Tenofovir .
2-NNRTI : Non Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors : e.g. Efavirenz
3-HIV Medicines of Protease Inhibitors i.e. PIs : Ritonavir , Darunavir , Atazanavir .
4-Integrase Inhibitors : e.g. Raltegravir . Most of the drugs are under clinical trial .
5-Entry Inhibitors : e.g. Maraviroc , Enfuvirtide .
6-HIV Medicines belongs to CCR5 receptor antagonists : These are C-C motif chemokine Receptor antagonists . e.g. Aplaviroc , Vicriviroc , Maraviroc etc.
7-Maturation inhibitors : e.g. Alpha interferon , bevirimat , Vivecon .
8-Alternative HIV Medicines : These are all under test trials . These agents are Naturally occuring Anti Retro Viral agents such as Spice Cumin , AL 721 , Chinese Cucumber , Herbs like St John’s Wort , the minerals selenium and zinc, Beta-carotene (Carrots), vitamin E, and Mushrooms.
All of these HIV Medicines have very serious side effects have to be used as per the prescription and doctors advice .
