Cough medicines are used to treat coughing and related symptoms . Cough is two types Dr cough and Productive cough . In productive cough phlegm or mucus is produced where as in Dry cough it is not .
Cough medicines are again divided in two types :
1- Dry cough : These agents are generally Anti tussives such as Codeine , Dextromethorphan
2- Productive cough : The main agent is Guaifenesin .
3- Alternative medicines in including Ayurvedic Cough medicines : Ginger , Garlic , Hyssop , Mullein , Echinacea , Vitamin C , Zinc and Benzonatates and Honey combinations of these agents .
Cough medicines can be used with prescription and with out prescription as OTC medicines also . But drugs like Codeine and Dextromethorphan may cause constipation .
