OPIATES

Opiates are the drugs used in acute pain conditions to reduce pain . These are generally used only when other pain reducing agents fail . These agents are known to the mankind for centuries . Opiates are Narcotic Alkaloids extracted from a plant called Opium poppy .
These agents have serious side effects like addiction that is why these agents use has become limited .
Opiates are classified in following way :
1-Morphine derivatives : Morphine , Codeine , Thebaine , Papaverine , Oripavine , Pseudomorphine etc.
2-Semi Synthetic Morphine derivatives : Hydromorphone , Oxymorphone , Oxycodone , Pethidine , Methdone , Morphinan , Pentazocine , Nalorphine .
3-Synthetic Morphine derivatives : Meperedine ,Levorphanol , Methadone , Levomethadyl , Fentanyl , Dextropropoxyphene .
Tramadol is one commonly used drug , not belongs to Opiates group but acts on same Muscarinic receptors and produces same effects .
