EMERGENCY PILLS

Emergency pills are used to terminate the pregnancy . This can be done with two types With Morning after pill and with an Abortion pill . Abortion pills have to be taken with medical supervision where as Morning after pills can be taken after the unprotected intercourse .
Emergency Pills are classified into 3 groups :
1- Progesterone Receptor Anatgonists : e.g. Mifepristone , Dinoprostone . It has to be taken after 24-72 hrs of Mefipristone administration to start uterus contractions .These agents generally work by blocking Progesterone hormone which is required for the maintenance of pregnancy .
2- Emergency Pills of Prostaglandin Analogues : Misoprostol , Gemeprost . These used to terminate pregnancy from 1-60 days of gestation .
Side effects : Bleeding, Headache and Nausea . Emergency Pills should be taken with Medical advise on the patients with Anemia, Cardiovascular diseases, Chronic adrenal failure, Uncontrolled seizure disorder, Liver problems, Renal problems, Respiratory disease and a history of taking aspirin, steroids or antidepressants. Emergency Pills also not advisable for HIV+ persons, or for heavy smokers. Caution should be taken in patients with fibroid uterus or previous surgery on uterus or cervix .
More over, In post seven weeks abortion small portions of the tissue remains in the uterus leading to infection and finally can lead to cancer .
3- Herbal Emergency Pills : Many herbs and plants are claimed as abortifacients if taken in certain doses or mixtures . Examples include Brewer's Eeast , Vitamin C , Wild Carrot , Blue Cohosh , Pennyroyal , Nutmeg , Mugwort , Papaya latex , Vervain , Common Rue , Ergot , Saffron , Tansy , pomegranate .
These Herbal Emergency Pills efficacy and safety is not proved and documented . But That these agents are used since centuries and has abortifascient action and lot of research has to be done on these herbs .
